How does it work?

  1. When the driver depresses the accelerator pedal, the torque converter transfers rotation from the engine to the transmission's primary shaft. At this point, first gear is engaged and the car starts off smoothly.
  2. As speed increases, the hydraulic unit analyzes the load on the motor and automatically selects the optimum gear. This is done by changing the oil pressure in the hydraulic system.
  3. When the driver takes his foot off the gas or hits the brake, the transmission downshifts the gear ratio, and when the driver comes to a complete stop, it puts the transmission into neutral.
  4. To reverse, the driver switches the lever to the "R" (Reverse) position. At this moment a special mechanism is activated, which reverses the direction of rotation of the output shaft.
  5. In "P" (Parking) mode, a locking device is activated inside the box that locks the output shaft, preventing the wheels from moving. This prevents the vehicle from rolling, even on a gradient.

Modern automatic transmissions can have from 4 to 10 gears, and some models are equipped with additional modes (Sport, Eco, Snow), which help to adapt the control to different conditions.
