Korean car brands: overview, history, emblems

Korean car brands are the automotive marques that come out of South Korea. There are seven main manufacturers: Hyundai, Kia and the premium Genesis (all three belong to the Hyundai Motor Group), the off-road specialist SsangYong (renamed KGM in 2023), Renault Korea (formerly Renault Samsung Motors), Daewoo (GM Korea since 2002) and the niche sports-car maker Proto Motors. As of the end of 2024, the Hyundai Motor Group was the third-largest carmaker in the world (7.23 million cars sold), behind only Toyota and Volkswagen. Over the past ten years, the Korean auto industry has made a real breakthrough thanks to distinctive design and a combination of quality, innovation and affordable pricing.

For buyers in Europe, Korean cars are appealing for four reasons:

  • Innovation. Korean manufacturers are among the first to roll out active safety systems, smart infotainment systems and electric vehicles.
  • Value for money. A high level of equipment at a relatively low purchase and running cost.
  • A long warranty. Kia offers 7 years / 150,000 km, while Hyundai offers 5 years with no mileage limit (more on this below).
  • Design and style. Korean companies bring in well-known designers and keep up with the latest trends, so their cars look modern.

Hyundai

Topping our list is the largest Korean carmaker, known for its broad model range and innovation. The brand’s line-up has it all – from affordable sedans to premium electric vehicles such as the Ioniq 5 and Kona Electric. Hyundai places its emphasis on advanced technology, design and value for money.

Hyundai Motor Company was founded in 1967 by Chung Ju-yung and has since become the largest carmaker in South Korea. Initially Hyundai built cars based on foreign models such as the Ford Cortina, but by 1975 it had unveiled its first own car – the Hyundai Pony, developed with the involvement of designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. In the 1990s Hyundai began entering global markets, and from the 2000s it invested heavily in new technology and design, becoming one of the most recognisable brands in the world.

Kia

Hyundai’s automotive subsidiary, offering stylish and reliable cars at affordable prices. Models such as the Sportage and Sorento are popular thanks to their thoughtful design and high level of safety. Kia targets a younger audience, rolling out modern technology and offering cars with attractive styling.

Kia was founded in 1944 as a maker of bicycles and components, and in the 1970s it began building cars, often in partnership with other companies such as Mazda and Ford. In 1998 Kia was acquired by Hyundai, which allowed the brand to expand its model range significantly. Since then Kia has grown rapidly, offering stylish and affordable cars and winning popularity on the global market.

Genesis

Hyundai’s premium brand, specialising in luxury sedans and crossovers such as the G80 and GV80. Genesis cars look superb both in photos and in the flesh, combining high-quality materials, attention to detail and cutting-edge technology to deliver competitive luxury cars on a par with European premium brands.

Genesis was founded by Hyundai in 2015 as a standalone premium brand. Genesis was originally a model in the Hyundai range, but the company decided to spin it off as a separate brand aimed at competing with German and Japanese luxury cars. Genesis quickly built a reputation for quality, design and advanced technology in models such as the G70 and GV80.

SsangYong is a Korean carmaker known for its SUVs and crossovers, including models such as the Rexton and Korando. The brand is aimed at buyers looking for functional, high-performance and reliable cars for outdoor pursuits.

SsangYong began operating in 1954, initially building vehicles for industry and the military. From 1980 the brand came to specialise in SUVs, and by 1990 it had begun exporting its cars abroad. Over its history SsangYong has passed through several changes of ownership, including India’s Mahindra & Mahindra, and continues to build practical, functional SUVs and crossovers.

Renault Korea (Renault Samsung Motors until 2022) – a joint venture between Renault and Samsung that builds cars for the domestic and international markets. Its main models, such as the SM6 and QM6, are sedans and crossovers known for their reliability and a focus on comfort.

Renault Korea was founded in 1994 as a joint venture between Samsung and Nissan, and from 2000 it became part of the Renault Group. Since then the brand has built cars for the domestic and international markets. Daewoo Motors (GM Korea)

In their early years, almost all Korean car brands worked solely for the domestic market, and one of them was Daewoo Motors – once a popular carmaker in Europe – founded in 1937. The company remained Korea’s leading carmaker until 2002, when it was acquired by General Motors and renamed GM Korea. Daewoo built affordable cars such as the Nexia and Lanos, which were popular in Asia and Eastern Europe. After the acquisition, many Daewoo models came to be sold under the Chevrolet brand.

Proto Motors

Proto Motors is a small South Korean company specialising in sports and concept cars. It is best known for its Spirra model – a Korean sports car produced in limited numbers.

Proto Motors was one of the few Korean companies focused on producing niche sports cars, until it was acquired by Oullim Motors in 2007.

What makes Korean cars appealing to buyers in Europe?

Three factors make Korean cars a smart buy in Europe: a long factory warranty, proven reliability and a wide choice of body styles to suit any budget.

What warranty do Korean cars come with in Europe?

  • Kia — 7 years or 150,000 km. This is the only 7-year factory warranty in Europe; it is valid in more than 20 countries and transfers in full to the new owner on resale.
  • Hyundai — 5 years with no mileage limit. It includes free roadside assistance for the full term and 12-year protection against perforation corrosion of the body.
  • The battery in both brands’ electric vehicles and hybrids is covered separately — 8 years or up to 160,000 km.

How reliable are Korean cars?

Hyundai, Kia and Genesis consistently rank highly in independent reliability surveys (for example, J.D. Power and the What Car? Reliability Survey). A long warranty is a direct indicator: the manufacturer is willing to pay for repairs for years because it is confident in the build quality.

Which Korean brand should you choose?

If your priority is The right brand
The lowest purchase and running costs Kia, Daewoo (Chevrolet)
The widest choice of models and EVs Hyundai
A premium level like German brands, but cheaper Genesis
An SUV for outdoor pursuits SsangYong (KGM)

Korean electric vehicles

Korean brands are among the leaders on the global EV market. Their models built on the E-GMP platform have won the top international awards:

  • Hyundai Ioniq 5 — World Car of the Year 2022.
  • Kia EV6 — European Car of the Year 2022; Kia became the first Korean brand to win this award.
  • Kia EV9 — World Car of the Year 2024.

Alongside these, the line-up includes the Hyundai Ioniq 6, Hyundai Kona Electric and Genesis Electrified GV70. This makes the Korean auto industry a genuine alternative to European and Chinese electric vehicles.

The ten most popular Korean models are predominantly Hyundai and Kia sedans and crossovers, plus the premium Genesis G80 sedan.

Hyundai Elantra

The Hyundai Avante (the Elantra in some markets) has been a people’s car in South Korea for 30 years now. The name Avante, which means “moving forward, progress” in Spanish, symbolises the model’s constant development. The car holds a firm lead in the lower-mid-size segment in Korea thanks to its continuous evolution.

The Hyundai Elantra, launched in 1990, was the forerunner of the Avante and ushered in the era of lower-mid-size sedans in Korea. In the run-up to the 1988 Seoul Olympics, the country’s economy was booming and people began to need a wider variety of cars. In response to growing demand, Hyundai set about developing an entirely new segment – the lower-mid-size sedan. The Elantra J1, launched in 1990, was presented as a “human-centred sedan” with advanced technology. To draw attention, the car’s promo video used 3D graphics, which was quite unusual for the time.

Kia Sportage

Kia began its journey in 1944. Initially it produced motorcycles, three-wheeled vehicles and bicycles, but it gradually moved into carmaking, unveiling its first model series, the Brisa, in 1974. Kia is renowned for building cars focused on high performance and equipped with advanced technology. One striking example is the Sportage SUV series, which debuted in 1995 and earned highly positive reviews.

The first-generation Sportage was presented as a compact five-seat, five-door SUV. Its exterior design featured rectangular headlights with the radiator grille between them, as well as roof rails that emphasised the car’s compact yet rugged style. Inside, the centre console housed the air-conditioning vents and the audio system, while the instrument panel had an analogue speedometer and a fuel gauge. For passengers’ convenience, electric windows were fitted. To date, five generations of the car have been produced.

Hyundai Tucson

The Hyundai Tucson became one of the most sought-after SUVs among non-premium models. The first-generation Hyundai Tucson, launched in 2005, was based on an upgraded Elantra platform. The model was offered in three trims: GL, GLS and GLX. This mid-size SUV had a reduced ride height and a longer wheelbase, which gave it a substantial look. The radiator grille sat between the two headlights, with pronounced contours running along the body from front to rear.

The first Tucson’s interior featured a simple, functional dashboard design with clear dials. The comfortable seats were trimmed in leather or fabric. For added safety, side airbags were fitted inside.

This generation of the Tucson was powered by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine paired with an all-wheel-drive system and a 4-speed automatic transmission. The model was adapted for off-road use: in addition to a low-range transfer case, the car featured stability control, traction control and anti-lock brakes. In all, four generations of the car have been produced.

Kia Rio

Since the Kia Rio first appeared, four generations of the model have been sold. The Rio was originally introduced as a small sedan with a 1.5-litre engine and a minimal price, which made it the most affordable new car at the time. A hatchback with an extended roofline and a more powerful engine was added later. Five years on, the Rio underwent a significant redesign: the sedan and hatchback gained a stylish look and were built on the Hyundai Accent platform. This upgrade also brought a higher level of comfort and safety, such as side airbags. You can buy a used car from Korea at an online auction.

In 2012 the Rio was upgraded again: the model grew larger and gained Kia’s new signature Tiger Nose radiator grille design. The car became more refined and was still offered with a class-leading warranty, but this had no effect on its price – it remained just as affordable. The fourth-generation Rio stood out with its understated styling, improved safety features and a higher level of equipment, which made it one of the most advanced and reliable cars in its class.

Hyundai Santa Fe

In the late 1990s Hyundai underwent a restructuring, during which the decision was taken to create its first SUV. In 2000 it went into production and was named the Santa Fe, after the city in the US state of New Mexico.

In some countries it was also known as the Hyundai Maxcruz. In terms of size and positioning, the model sits between the Hyundai Tucson and the Hyundai Palisade. The first-generation Hyundai Santa Fe was an important step in establishing the brand on the SUV market. This crossover stood out from traditional body-on-frame vehicles thanks to a construction that delivered more comfortable, car-like handling.

The petrol engine range included 1.8-, 2.0- and 2.4-litre inline-four units. More powerful options were also offered, with 2.7- and 3.5-litre V6 engines. The diesel version was fitted with a 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder engine.

Genesis G80

The Genesis G80 is a premium mid-size sedan that became one of the key models of the luxury Genesis brand, a division of Hyundai Motor Company. The model’s history began with the start of its production in 2016, when it was launched as a standalone car under the Genesis brand, although it was essentially an updated version of the second-generation Hyundai Genesis. The G80 was valued for its high build quality, modern technology and stylish design.

In 2020 the second generation of the Genesis G80 was released, with an all-new design that emphasised elegant lines and the brand’s signature features, such as the dual-tier headlights and distinctive grille. The new-generation G80 was also equipped with advanced safety systems and infotainment features, which allowed it to compete with the German premium marques.

The Genesis G80 became a symbol of the brand’s growth on the international stage and earned praise for its successful blend of luxury, technology and competitive pricing, particularly in the US and South Korean markets.

Kia Sorento

Over the years of its existence, the company has produced many models that gained popularity thanks to high performance, comfortable handling and advanced safety systems. One of them was the Kia Sorento, introduced in the SUV line-up. The Sorento won drivers’ attention first and foremost thanks to its good driving dynamics and spacious interior.

The first-generation Kia Sorento came to market in 2002 as a compact, body-on-frame SUV. The front of the car stood out with its rounded-corner headlights and a wide radiator grille with the Kia logo in the centre. The lower part of the bumper was unpainted, and at the rear there was a rounded tailgate. The 271 cm wheelbase contributed to stability and ride comfort.

Hyundai Sonata

The first version of the Hyundai Sonata was designed by the renowned car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro and his ItalDesign studio. After a successful launch in Korea, the model arrived on the US market. By the mid-1990s the Sonata had begun to take on more modern features: front airbags, an improved audio system and air conditioning, which had previously been offered only as an option, all appeared.

In the late 1990s the Sonata gained a more rounded design, and in 2011 Hyundai introduced the new “Fluidic Sculpture” styling, which led to unprecedented success with buyers. The current version of the Sonata has been updated once again, earning plenty of positive reviews for its advanced technology, sophisticated safety systems and more economical engines. This model remains one of the most enduring and successful in the Korean manufacturer’s line-up.

You can buy a used Hyundai Sonata at the auction of cars from Korea, which offers cars in their original specifications and good technical condition.

This sports liftback, first unveiled in 2017, became a landmark model for Kia, as it marked the brand’s move into building sporty and premium cars. The model was developed under the lead of former BMW engineer Biermann and designer Schreyer, who gave the car superb technical specifications and expressive styling.

Fitted with rear-wheel drive and powerful engines (including a 3.3-litre turbocharged V6), the Kia Stinger was designed to compete with European sports sedans. Its looks and performance attracted the attention of both motoring critics and buyers, which helped improve Kia’s image on the global market.
