Best convertibles: top 10

Best convertibles: top 10Cabriolets (open-top cars) appeared in the late 19th century, when the first cars were essentially motorized carriages without a roof. Over time, with the development of technology, folding soft roofs (stowed in the trunk) and later rigid transformation mechanisms began to appear, which made it possible to operate the car not only in summer.

A little bit about the evolution of convertibles:

  • 1900's - 1930's - open cars were the norm as roofs were made of cloth and rigid structures were just beginning to be developed.
  • The 1950s through the 1970s was the golden era of convertibles - brands like Chevrolet, Ford, Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari created iconic models.
  • 1980s - 1990s - temporary decline in interest due to safety concerns and the popularity of coupes.
  • The 2000s-present - the revival of convertibles thanks to modern technology, rigid convertible roofs and improved aerodynamic solutions.

At different times, the market has had its own legendary cars from this category. The best convertibles of all time:

And yet, what is the appeal of convertibles? Modern models, among other things, have excellent noise insulation, but we do not love them at all for this.

It's simple:

  • Emotion and freedom - riding with an open top gives an unforgettable experience.
  • Aesthetics - convertibles look stylish and attract attention.
  • Status - these cars are often seen as a sign of success.
  • A variety of choices from compact roadsters to luxury GTs.
  • Technology - modern roofs fold up quickly and make the auto all-season.

Porsche 911 Cabriolet (992) - 2019-present.

The Porsche 911 is an icon of the automotive world, and its convertible version remains one of the most desirable among open-top sports cars. The first generation 911 Cabriolet appeared in 1982 (911 SC series), which was a real event for the brand, which had previously offered only coupe and targa versions. Over the decades, the cabriolet has evolved many times, retaining its classic features but adapting to modern technology.

In 2019, Porsche introduced a new, eighth generation 911 under the 992 index. The Cabriolet received an improved design of the folding soft top, which now opens in just 12 seconds even at speeds of up to 50 km/h. Compared to its predecessor, the body has become stiffer thanks to the use of aluminum, which improved handling and dynamics. And the absence of corrosion has become a very favorable factor for durability, given the design features of this type of car.

Interesting fact: the rollover protection system, which first appeared in 911 convertibles back in the 1980s, is now activated by pyrotechnic charging mechanisms, instantly extending the safety arcs if necessary.
