French car brands
The French automotive industry sold nearly 2.21 million vehicles in 2023, up from about 1.9 million units in 2022. France ranked third in terms of vehicle sales in Europe in 2023, behind only Germany and the UK.
Why are French car brands popular? First of all, their secret is in their rich and long history, which in many ways has become a determinant of style, quality and originality of modern cars. From humble beginnings to permanent participation in the International Motor Show, the French automobile industry has come a long way. And it all began in 1769, when French inventor Nicolas-Joseph Kyunyo created the first in history vehicle with a steam engine. And in the early 19th century, Parisian designer Francois Isaac de Rivaz developed the first two-stroke internal combustion engine.
Further developments were much more rapid. In 1860 Etienne Lenoir designed the first usable engine operating on a mixture of gas and air, and in 1884 Edouard Delamarre-De Boutville created a gasoline-powered car. The first automobile manufacturer in France began operations in 1887 - the company was called Panhard et Levassor.
Those who love French cars talk about the following advantages of the French car industry:Â
- Innovation and uniqueness in design and manufacturing: with each new generation of vehicles, there are advanced features that were not available in previous models.
- Reasonable prices compared to other brands offering the same quality.
- French cars are known for their eccentric designs, which is probably why many athletes use them at marathons to attract attention.
French car brands
The French automobile industry offers products from several brands, of which the most famous are:Â
- Renault is one of the most popular and exported brands, producing both passenger cars and commercial vehicles.
- Peugeot is one of the oldest and largest automobile manufacturers in France.
- Citroën - known for its innovative and bold design solutions.
- Bugatti - known for its luxury supercars, although now owned by the Volkswagen Group, the brand is historically French.
- DS Automobiles is a premium brand spun off from Citroën, focused on luxury cars.
This list can be much longer, as there are also lesser known outside the country brands of French cars, but these five are considered the main ones in the history of the French car industry. The most popular models of these brands are in our review.
Top 3 best Renaults on sale
The following Renault brand models are involved in our review:
- Renault Arkana 1st generation (2021+)
- Renault Koleos 2nd generation (2016+)
- Renault Mégane 4th generation (2020+)
Renault Arkana 1st generation (2021+)
The Arkana is well equipped and has sporty dynamics. The Renault Arkana was first introduced in Europe in 2020, and this compact French SUV with its coupe-like design really does feel like a modern and even prestigious vehicle, at least in the mid-level Intens trim.
Already in the base configuration, all models are equipped with leather seat upholstery, heated leather steering wheel, LED headlights, adaptive cruise control and traffic sign recognition. Of the three available trims, the Intens is worth choosing, which includes stylish 18-inch alloy wheels that emphasize the sporty look, as well as a pair of heated, ventilated and electrically adjustable front seats. The seats offer good support, although they can feel a little stiff when used over long distances, and the perforated leather and suede upholstery are above average.
Add to that a larger 9.3-inch center touchscreen in portrait orientation and a sleek gearshift lever, and first impressions of the cabin are quite positive.
Key Features:
- Engine: 1.3 liter, turbocharged with 150 hp.Â
- Transmission: 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (EDC).
- Drive: front.
- Fuel consumption: about 6-7 liters per 100 km (in mixed cycle).
- Safety: adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking system, lane keeping system, rearview camera and parktronics, 6 airbags.
Renault Koleos 2nd generation (2016+)
The second-generation Renault Koleos mid-size SUV is available in three trim levels (Life, Zen and top-of-the-range Intens). Transmission options include front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions.
At the time of release, one engine is available - an atmospheric 2.5-liter gasoline four-cylinder motor, with an output of 126 kW. All models are equipped with CVT automatic transmission as standard.
The Koleos has transformed from a mediocre model to a serious competitor, offering more space, improved equipment and attractive design. The model performs best in the maximum configuration, where it offers a host of modern features at an attractive price. However, the powertrain may not seem dynamic enough at high speeds.
Key Features:
- Engine: gasoline, atmospheric 2.5 liter with an output of 171 hp.
- Transmission: Variator (CVT).
- Drive: front or all-wheel drive (depending on equipment).
- Fuel consumption (mixed cycle): about 8.1 l/100 km for the front-wheel drive version and about 8.3 l/100 km for the all-wheel drive version.
- Safety: automatic emergency braking system, blind spot monitoring system, rearview camera, lane-keeping system, adaptive cruise control, parktronics (front and rear).
Renault Mégane 4th generation (2020+)
Many people associate French car brands with this brand and this model. In 2020, Renault introduced the updated fourth generation Megane, which is an even smarter choice in many aspects. If you're considering segment hatchbacks like the Focus or Astra over the 2020 to 2022 timeframe, the Megane may no longer be the first car that comes to mind. However, the updated MK4 version proves to be thoughtful, practical and very stylish, especially in the Sport Tourer station wagon body. The Megane offers more equipment for its money than most rivals of this period, as well as an optional hybrid engine.Â
The fourth-generation Megane started selling back in 2016. The exterior updates include the bumper, which now has more elegant angular cut-outs, and the lower grille, which is decorated with chrome on the base "Iconic" models. The top-of-the-range 'R.S. Line' version has a sportier look thanks to F1-inspired decoration across the entire width of the front end.
Key Features:
- Engines: gasoline - 1.3 TCe (115-160 hp), turbocharged, 4 cylinders, diesel - 1.5 Blue dCi (95-115 hp), turbocharged, 4 cylinders, 1.7 Blue dCi (150 hp), turbocharged, 4 cylinders, hybrid versions - 1.6 E-Tech (160 hp), with gasoline engine and electric motor.
- Transmissions: 6-speed manual transmission, 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission EDC, variator for some versions.
- Drive: front-wheel drive.
- Safety: blind spot monitoring system, lane keeping assistant, automatic emergency braking system, cruise control with speed limiter.
Top 3 best Peugeot on sale
The following models are in our review:
- Peugeot 3008 second generation (2020+)
- Peugeot 5008 second generation (2021+)Â
- Peugeot 508 second generation (2021+)
Peugeot 3008 second generation (2020+)
The outgoing Peugeot 3008 is still a worthy competitor in the family SUV class, thanks to its upmarket interior, refinement and powerful engine line-up. It is also practical and provides an enjoyable driving experience, although not as engaging as some rivals. The car is comfortable, with a carefully tuned suspension that is stiff enough for good handling, yet soft enough to smooth out even significant road irregularities.
The second generation Peugeot 3008 debuted in 2016 and was a major departure from the previous model with its angular and sporty exterior design replacing the previous, more square minivan-like look. The interior also took a step forward, becoming more premium, with the use of quality materials and the introduction of Peugeot's i-Cockpit technology. The model was restyled for 2021, receiving sharper styling elements inspired by the compact Peugeot 208, including the brand's distinctive 'fangs' daytime running lights.
Key Features:
- Engines: gasoline engines - 1.2 PureTech with 130 hp, 1.6 PureTech with 180 hp and diesel engines - 1.5 BlueHDi with 130 hp. 2.0 BlueHDi with 180 hp.
- Transmission: 6-speed manual transmission or 8-speed automatic transmission.
- Fuel consumption (mixed cycle): gasoline - 5.6-6.0 l/100 km, diesel - 4.0-4.6 l/100 km.
- Safety: automatic emergency braking system, traffic sign recognition system, lane control, blind spot monitoring system, etc.
Peugeot 5008 second generation (2021+)Â
The Peugeot 5008 is longer than the five-seater 3008 and has virtually the same specification, but it does have two extra seats. The changes in appearance are not immediately noticeable unless you compare the old and new versions - a result of the fact that the model already had an avant-garde design since the current generation was released in 2017.
The most significant changes can be seen in the front end, where there is a frameless grille like the rest of the updated Peugeot models, as well as vertical daytime running lights, which replaced the fog lights of the previous version. The headlight cluster has also been given a lower profile, giving the car a more modern look.
Visually, it is one of the most attractive cars in its segment and stands out nicely from the competition.Â
Key Features:
Here are the key features of the second-generation Peugeot 5008 after the 2021 restyling:
- Engines: gasoline engines - 1.2 PureTech with 130 hp, 1.6 PureTech with 180 hp, diesel engines - 1.5 BlueHDi with 130 hp, 2.0 BlueHDi with 180 hp.
- Transmission: 6-speed manual transmission or 8-speed automatic transmission.
- Fuel consumption (mixed cycle): gasoline - 5.7-6.7 l/100 km, diesel - 4.0-5.1 l/100 km.
- Safety: automatic emergency braking, lane keeping system, traffic sign recognition, surround-view cameras, etc.Â
Peugeot 508 second generation (2021+)
We wouldn't be wrong if we said that this is the most popular car brand in France - at least it has happened more than once during its entire existence. The 508 is very close to perfection. The aggressive design of the front end is literally "bracketed" by LED headlights in the shape of fangs that dip into the bumper, creating an impressive and futuristic look, especially on a dark road at night.
The long, flowing lines reference the classic proportions of the DS, but they're not quite as avant-garde. It's a car that draws attention, and the wide rear end with its blacked-out headlamps that flow into the decorative trunk liner gives the car a powerful and purposeful look.
In the saloon, a true avant-garde experience awaits you. From Peugeot's i-Cockpit (miniature steering wheel, tall dashboard) to the choice of materials and bold shapes, it's a 100 percent success. Although the interior is not as impressive as the 3008, there are still many highlights that deserve attention.Â
Key Features:
- Engines: gasoline - 1.6 PureTech with 180 horsepower, diesel - 1.5 BlueHDi with 130 horsepower, 2.0 BlueHDi with 160 horsepower, hybrid - 1.6 PureTech + electric motor with 225 horsepower.
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic EAT8.
- Safety: automatic emergency braking system, blind spot monitoring, lane keeping system, traffic sign recognition, etc.Â
Top 3 best Citroen on sale
In our review:
- Citroën C5 Aircross first generation (2021+)
- Citroën C3 Aircross first generation (2017+)
- Citroën C4 second generation (2020+)
Citroën C5 Aircross first generation (2021+)
Based on the 2015 Aircross concept, the Citroen C5 Aircross offers a massive design that is markedly different from the aerodynamic lines of the brand's iconic models from past decades. Its rounded shapes give the crossover a spacious and practical feel, making it a great option for families. The exterior of the car seems to tell us that the car is ready for off-roading, although for many it is more a matter of style than functionality.
Citroen standard equipment includes 19-inch alloy wheels, front and rear parktronics, power-folding mirrors, keyless entry and start, electric trunk lid with motion-open feature, leather interior trim, adaptive cruise control, dual-zone climate control, electric dimming.
Key Features:
- Engines: gasoline engine - 1.6 PureTech with 180 hp, diesel engine - 2.0 BlueHDi with 177 hp, hybrid - 1.6 PureTech + electric motor with 225 hp.
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic.
- Fuel consumption (mixed cycle): about 5.7-6.5 l/100 km, diesel - 4.5-5.0 l/100 km, hybrid - about 1.4-1.6 l/100 km (in PHEV mode).
- Safety: automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with function, lane keeping system, traffic sign recognition, etc.
Citroën C3 Aircross first generation (2017+)
Like rivals Seat Arona and Kia Stonic, the C3 Aircross is a version of the small hatchback with increased ground clearance. The C3 also features a more massive design and SUV-inspired accessories such as roof rails and additional black plastic body cladding to give the car a more rugged look.
Engines range from a weak atmospheric 1.2-liter gasoline engine with 82 hp to more powerful turbocharged versions of the same engine with 108 and 128 hp. Two versions of the 1.5-liter diesel engine with 99 and 118 hp are also available. The less powerful versions are equipped with a five-speed manual gearbox, while the more powerful versions come with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic.
The car is available in three configurations: Feel, Origins and Flair. Even the most affordable version of the C3 Aircross is equipped with comfort, convenience and multimedia features. Feel includes everything you need: touchscreen multimedia system, air conditioning and cruise control.Â
Key Features:
- Engines: gasoline engines - 1.2 PureTech with 82, 110 and 130 hp, diesel engines - 1.5 BlueHDi 100 and 1.5 BlueHDi 120 with 99 and 118 hp.
- Transmission: 5 and 6-speed manual or automatic transmission.
- Safety: active braking, hill start assist, driver fatigue monitoring, rearview camera and parking sensors.
Citroën C4 second generation (2020+)
Previously, the group already had the C4 Cactus, the original upscale family car, which may be the true predecessor of the current C4.
Under the hood, the C4 has one 1.2-liter gasoline engine available in three power options: 99 hp, 128 hp and 153 hp. There is also a 1.5 liter diesel version with 108 or 128 hp. For fans of "green" transportation, a fully electric version is available - Citroën e-C4.
All engines deliver decent results. Even the base 99bhp petrol motor provides good traction. If you frequently carry passengers or want a little more power, the 128 hp version is worth considering. Both diesel variants provide good dynamics, and the 1.5-liter engine makes the C4 comfortable for long journeys on the highway.
Key Features:
- Engines: gasoline engines (PureTech) - 100, 130, 155 hp, turbocharged, diesel engines (BlueHDi) - 108, 128 hp, electric version - 136 hp with a range of up to 350 km.
- Transmission: 6-speed manual transmission, 8-speed automatic transmission.
- Trunk volume: 380 liters, with folded seats: up to 1250 liters.
- Safety: driver assistants including automatic emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, blind spot monitoring and lane keeping assistant.
Top 3 best Bugatti on sale
The review involves:
- Bugatti Chiron (2016+)
- Bugatti Divo 1st generation (2018-2021)
- Bugatti Veyron 2nd generation (2011-2024)
Bugatti Chiron (2016+)
Chiron combines stylish design elements with even more luxurious interior finishes. Real silver, aluminum and carbon fiber are used for switches, buttons and panels.
The seats still offer plenty of adjustments to ensure a high level of comfort. In the Chiron, you sit low, and while forward visibility is good, rearward visibility is almost non-existent, but the rearview camera comes to the rescue.
There is little storage space in the cabin, but there is a cooled glovebox and some space behind the seats and in the front trunk. One of the frequent complaints about the Veyron was the lack of driver involvement in the driving experience, so Bugatti engineers have worked hard to make the Chiron more responsive and interactive. The car now feels not just like a super-powered Audi TT, but like a real sports car with haptic feedback. The Chiron has become much sharper and more engaging to drive.
Key Features:
- Engine: 8.0-liter W16 quad-turbocharged with 1,500 hp.Â
- Transmission: 7-speed dual-clutch robotized transmission.
- 0-100 km/h acceleration: 2.4 seconds.
- Top speed: electronically limited to 420 km/h (without limiter - over 480 km/h on special versions).
- Safety and assistance systems: ABS, ESP, stability control, cameras and parking sensors.
Bugatti Divo 1st generation (2018-2021)
The Chiron genes are more evident in the interior. Sitting just a few centimeters off the ground, the driver sees a speedometer with markings up to 500 km/h surrounded by screens and a small steering wheel with two red buttons and gearshift paddles.
The interior of the car can be two-color, for example, gray driver's seat, black passenger's, and the steering wheel can have both colors. But more than two-thirds of buyers choose to customize the interior, and almost any wishes can be fulfilled at an additional cost.
Bugatti didn't make any major changes to the mechanicals, so the Divo is powered by the same 8.0-liter W16 quad-turbocharged engine as the Chiron. It produces 1500 hp, transmitted to all four wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Acceleration to 100 km/h takes 2.4 seconds, matching the Chiron's performance.
Key Features:
- Engine: 8.0-liter W16 quad-turbocharged with 1,500 hp.Â
- Transmission: 7-speed dual-clutch robotized transmission.
- 0-100 km/h acceleration: 2.4 seconds.
- Top speed: limited to 380 km/h.
- Drive: permanent all-wheel drive with active torque distribution.
Bugatti Veyron 2nd generation (2011-2024)
300 km per hour for the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport is just an acceleration, and it can accelerate for another 100 kilometers before the electronic speed limiter is activated. It is arguably one of the greatest supercars of all time. The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 was created for those with unlimited financial resources and a thirst for dizzying speed. Veyron is equipped with 8.0-liter W16 engine with four turbochargers and all-wheel drive, which allows to develop 1001 hp and reach speeds of over 320 km/h. For lovers of open-air driving, a Grand Sport version with a targa-type roof was released.
Key Features:
- Engine: W16 quad-turbocharged with 1,200 horsepower.Â
- Transmission: 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
- Acceleration 0-100 km/h: about 2.5 seconds.
- Top speed: Super Sport - 431 km/h, Grand Sport Vitesse - 410 km/h (convertible).
Other car brands in France
To make our review complete, we'll tell you about lesser-known carmakers outside France:
- DS Automobiles
- Alpine
- Venturi
- Ligier
- Méhari
- Panhard
DS Automobiles
In 1955, the first DS model debuted at the Paris Motor Show, which created a sensation and left an indelible mark in the history of the automotive industry. This innovative, elegant and stylish car embodied the French mastery of luxury and the avant-garde spirit that still underpins the company's product philosophy and inspires new designs.
In June 2015, DS celebrated the achievement of 500,000 cars sold in Europe. It took the brand 5.5 years to achieve this. DS sales in Europe have been increasing in recent years, with 40,000 vehicles sold in 2020, 50,000 in 2021 and the figure rising to 60,000 in 2022.
Alpine
Alpine was founded in 1955 by Jean Redelé, a young motorsport enthusiast who was inspired by the Alps - a favorite racing destination - to choose a name for his brand.
The company's growth began rapidly with the introduction of the original A110 in 1962. At this time Alpine worked closely with Renault, as Alpine cars were sold and serviced at Renault dealerships. In the early 1970s, Alpine entered the rallying elite.Â
Venturi Automobiles
A French car company founded in 1984 that specialized in sports cars and later moved into the development of electric cars and technology for racing and high speeds.
The first model, the Venturi Coupé, was introduced in 1986. The car was characterized by elegant design and outstanding technical characteristics for its time. However, despite high ambitions and good reviews from critics, Venturi had difficulties in achieving mass sales.
Today, Venturi remains one of the leading companies in electric vehicles, focusing on developing innovative solutions for the automotive industry and motorsports. In addition to racing, the company develops electric vehicles for extreme environments such as Arctic exploration.
Ligier
French automobile company founded in 1968 by former motor racing driver and rugby player Guy Ligier. The company is known as a manufacturer of racing cars and compact city cars, especially microcars that can be driven without a driver's license in some countries.
In 2008, Ligier merged with another French microcar manufacturer, Microcar, allowing both companies to strengthen their positions in the compact car market.
Today, Ligier produces modern microcars and electric vehicles focused on urban transportation with attention to safety, comfort and environmental friendliness.
Panhard
Panhard is one of the oldest French automobile companies, founded in 1887 by René Panhard and Emile Levasseur. It played a key role in the formation of the automotive industry and made a significant contribution to the development of automobile technology and design.
Today, the Panhard brand exists as a division of Arquus, which specializes in the development and production of military vehicles. Despite the discontinuation of civilian vehicle production, the company continues to be an important player in the defense industry.
